Go for Skincare Products with Minimal Ingredients

Use Mild Skincare Products
Newborns have a soft and tender skin, therefore it’s crucial not to use harsh skincare products on their skins. Use a mild soap, cream, powder, moisturizer on your newborn’s skin as this will help to prevent skin allergies and keep their skin shine
Limit Your Baby’s Exposure to Direct Sunlight
Limit your baby’s exposure to sunlight as it is harmful to their skin. Furthermore, the UV rays of the sun can put your baby at risk of skin cancer. So, ensure that your newborn does not get exposed to direct sunlight. You can do this by; i) covering your baby with an umbrella or putting him/her under a shade when the sun is scorching; ii) wearing your baby a long-sleeve light shirt; iii) try to limit your baby’s outing between 10am and 4pm when the sun is really scorching.
Bathe Them Properly
Bathing your baby properly is crucial in caring for their skin. Use warm water, bathe them in a warm room, ensure they have short-duration bathes. After bathing, ensure your baby is completely dry before wearing them a diaper.
Keep Your Baby’s Clothes, Underwear and Undershirts Clean
Your newborn’s clothes, underwear, undershirts and any other clothing item that comes in contact with their skin must be clean. They have a delicate skin which when in contact with an unclean clothing item, can lead to various skin infections such as skin rash, acne, eczema, and so much more. You wouldn’t want that for your newborn, so properly wash their clothing items before putting it on them.
Shield their Skin from Vomit, Spit and Other Food Particles
Babies often drop food particles, or even vomit when feeding them and these food particles can affect their skin. So, it is important to use baby bibs, towels in order to prevent these food particles from coming in contact with their skin.
Moisturize their Skin
This is particularly important if your baby has a dry skin. Although babies often develop dry skin spots which naturally goes away with time. Pamper Their Delicate Skin
Your newborn skin deserves to be pampered and adequately nurtured. By so doing, you prevent rashes and bumps. There are different kinds of rash that can affect a baby’s skin and they include;
- Diaper rash- Diaper rash is a common form of inflamed skin that appears as a patchwork of bright red skin on your baby’s bottom. When you notice a sore-looking area on your baby’s bottom, it is most likely a diaper rash. To treat diaper rash, treat sore areas with care, master the art of changing your baby’s diaper quickly, regular diaper changes, washing your hands properly before and after diaper changes.
- Cradle cap- Cradle cap is a common skin condition in newborns and babies that leads to rough patches on their scalp, yellow patches and flaking. To treat cradle cap, massage your baby’s scalp preferably with coconut oil or cocoa butter, apply a mild shampoo, gently scrub; a dandruff shampoo can be used as a final resort.
- Baby acne- Baby acne, also known as neonatal acne, is a common, usually temporary skin condition that develops on a baby’s face or body. It causes a tiny red or white bumps or pimples on their skin. It occurs in over 20 percent of newborns. Most times, when your baby has an acne, it goes on its own. However, treatment options include; keeping your baby’s skin clean, avoiding harsh skin care products; and do not scrub their skin with a towel as it can increase the spread.
- Milia- Milia are tiny white bumps that appear on a baby’s nose, chin or cheeks. They are common in newborns but can occur at any age. Milia often require no treatment as they disappear on their own within few weeks or months.
- Heat Rash- Heat rashes appear when sweat gets trapped under the skin. Babies are more vulnerable to heat rash than adults because of their smaller sweat glands and the fact that they are less able to regulate their body temperature. Tight clothes, swaddles, and blankets often cause heat rash in babies. To treat the rash, give them a cool bath, keep your baby’s skin cool and dry, rinse away oil and sweat with cool water & gently dry their skin, use air conditioner or fan to keep your baby’s skin cool and dry, apply a cool compress to the affected areas.
- Baby Eczema- Eczema in babies lead to dry, red patches, scaly, itchy, cracked skin. Treatment of eczema in babies range from daily bathing them with warm water, to moisturizing their skin with oil, preferably fragrance-free ointment such as Vaseline (Petroleum-jelly).
