DIY No Sew Fleece Blanket Directions for Kids

We just spent a half day making no sew fleece blankets because I wanted a tangible way for my kids to give to others in need. I love making blankets since they’re hands-on and practical — everyone can use a blanket, right?

*Plus, kids can relate to needing blankets for warmth as well as for a feeling of security. How many of our kids had their own binkies?*

Then, with your finished blankets, you can give them to any organization that collects donated blankets such as Project Linus or Binkie Patrol. These groups donate blankets to hospitals, shelters, and hospices. (Or, you can donate directly to a children’s hospital by looking on their website for that information.)

No Sew Blankets

We bought blanket kits at JoAnn Fabrics because it seemed easiest, and they were on sale. The fleece pieces were already precut and ready to go. Love that!

However, if you want to pick out your own fabric, I recommend these measurements:

small blankets for babies: 1 yard
medium blankets for preschoolers: 1.5 – 2 yards
twin bed blankets: 2.5 yards

Remember to get two separate fabric colors. Your kids will love choosing the two fabrics to use – it’s part of the fun!

First

. . . lay the blankets together with the brighter sides facing out. Cut a 5″ square on the corners.

Next

. . . Cut 1″ x 5″ strips all around the edges of the fabric. I cut out a piece of cardboard to use as a template so the girls could measure and cut quickly.

Then

. . . tie the fringe pieces at the ends of the no sew fleece blanket together in knots!

Double knot the knots or the ties will come undone.
