- The jaguar, scientific name panthera onca, is a large cat species with yellow fur and black spots.
- They are the third largest cats in the world and the largest cat species in the Americas.
- The name ‘jaguar’ comes from the indigenous word ‘yaguar’, which means ‘he who kills with one leap.’
- 50% of these big cats live in Brazil, while the rest live in nearby countries in Central and South America.
- Nowadays, jaguarS are found in habitats such as the Amazon basin and Central America, but historically they were found as far north as the Grand Canyon.
- After a gestation period of 100 days, female jaguars will give birth to a litter of two to four cubs.
- There are around 173,000 jaguars left in the world today.
- Their teeth are strong enough to bite through the hard shells of turtles.
- Their preferred habitat is the dense forest with lakes and rivers – they are strong swimmers!
- Jaguar cubs weigh about the same as a loaf of bread when they’re born.
