- Michigan, known as the Wolverine State, earned its nickname because of the wolverine-like toughness shown by its settlers during the Indian War.
- Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, is nicknamed the Motor City because it’s the automotive industry hub, where Ford and General Motors started.
- The University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, is famous for being the first place where phone number is assigned. It was the start of a revolutionary communication system!
- Mackinac Island, located between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, is the only place in the US where motor vehicles are banned.
- The Detroit Zoo was the first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall, a special place where you could walk around and see animals instead of shops.
- Michigan is the only state to have two peninsulas, the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula, connected by the Mackinac Bridge.
