1. Blue whales are marine animals and the largest animals on Earth, weighing up to 200 tons. The scientific name for blue whales is Balaenoptera musculus.
2. Blue whales typically travel alone, in pairs, or small groups of up to six individuals.
3. The International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling of blue whales in 1966, but they are still and endangered species due to past whaling activities.
4. They have no natural predators except killer whales, which occasionally attack juvenile blue whales.
5. Blue whales can be found in both the northern and southern hemisphere. They inhabit all oceans except for the Arctic.
6. Summer is feeding season for whales, when there is an abundance of krill in the water. They can eat up to four tons of krill every day.

7. Blue whales can grow up to the length of three school buses lined up end to end, and their tongues can weigh as much as an elephant.
8. Blue whales are known to be the loudest animals on the planet, with their calls reaching up to 188 decibels.
9. Blue whale calves are born weighing up to three tons and nursed by their mother for around six months.
10. Blue whales can swim at a cruising speed of up to 20 miles per hour when needed.
11. Blue whales have a small dorsal fin that is located near the rear of their body.
12. This fin can be difficult to spot due to its size as it is only one foot long.
13. They are typically found in deep ocean waters, where they can dive to depths of up to 500 meters in search of their prey.
