This is so great for preschoolers and younger elementary aged kids who need math practice. And since it doubles as a watermelon craft, it’s even more fun!

As you can see by our quick little video, this was a super simple project! We assembled construction paper onto a pizza pan with some craft glue and then decorated it with some magnetic “seeds” according to the picture instructions in Crafts for Kids.

How To Make This Cute Watermelon Craft and Counting Activity

Step 1

Cut out a half circle from your red construction paper.

Step 2

Cut out the thin half circle from the green construction paper to make the rind.

Step 3

Glue down the red half circle on the pizza baking sheet smoothing out any wrinkles or bubbles.

Step 4

Glue the green construction paper down on the edge of the baking sheet so that it looks like a watermelon rind.

Step 5

Add you little magnets to look like watermelon seeds.

And you’re done! So easy to make! Now it’s time to play and count.

Ideas For This Fun Watermelon Counting Game Activity

Using the magnetic watermelon board for counting games is only limited by the imagination!

• Learning to count:  Take the seeds off and ask the child to add a certain number of seeds to the watermelon.
• Matching amounts:  Place a number of seeds above the watermelon on the shiny pizza plate surface and then have the child mirror that amount of seeds on the watermelon.
• Simple addition:  Verbally ask a math question and have the child answer in watermelon seed placement!
• Skip counting:  Assign a value to each seed and have the child figure out how many are represented by skip counting.
• Pattern making:  Use spacing between seeds to create a pattern that needs to be finished.
