How to Make Button Ornaments
Each week I put together art projects for a group of 3 to 5-year-old children. So I find myself wandering the aisles in an arts and crafts supply store often. You probably have most of the items required to make these ornaments already, and it’s a great excuse to dive into that jar of buttons you have.
We love these homemade ornaments because they are fun and easy to make, and you can make them in whatever color matches your Christmas colors.
Supplies needed to make button ornaments
- Paper mache ball
- Paint
- Buttons
- Mod Podge
- Paintbrush
- Eye screws (small)
- String or ribbon
We found paper mache balls in the paper mache section at our craft store.
Instructions for making button ornaments
Step 1
Wind eye screws into the paper mache balls. Tie a loop of string to each one. You can use this loop to hang the ornaments while painting and gluing buttons to them. After you are finished, replace the string if it has paint or glue on it before hanging the ornament on the tree.
Step 2
Paint your paper mache balls in the colors of the buttons you are going to be gluing to the ornament. Set them aside to dry before moving onto the next step. You should only need one coat of paint.
Step 3
Using Mod Podge, glue buttons to the painted paper mache ball. We used buttons of various shades and shapes. For the white ball, we included silver buttons and snowflakes too. Set the ornaments aside until they are dry before hanging them on the Christmas tree.
