Do you love learning World War I facts? Here’s one: Did you know that one of the largest ever wars was fought at the start of the 20th Century?
Before that, military conflicts were largely localized in specific regions, but in World War I, major battles were fought across the globe for the first time, from the Middle East, to the Eastern Front, as well as Central Europe.
So if your kids love history, and want to learn more about the Battle of the Somme, and others that took place during World War I, you’ve come to the right place.

World War I Facts FOR KIDS
- World War I, also known as the Great War or the First World War, was a global military conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918.
- The war started on 28th July 1914 when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated and ended on 11th November 1918.
- Over 8 million soldiers died in the First World War.
- The Central Powers, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, were pitted against the Allied Powers, which included Great Britain, France, Russia (until 1917), and eventually the United States.
- The United States initially remained neutral in the conflict, but President Woodrow Wilson eventually decided to enter the war in 1917 on the side of the Allied Powers.
- The Western Front, a major area of the conflict, saw intense fighting between the Allied and Central Powers, characterized by trench warfare and the use of machine guns.
- The War finished when Germany signed the Armistice, an agreement for peace when they realized they wouldn’t be able to win the war.
- Soldiers from both sides lived in trenches, and the land between the two trenches was called “No Man’s Land”, and it’s where battles took place.
- After four years of war, The Allies won the war.
- Each year on 11th November it is Remembrance Day, a day where we remember everyone who fought and lost their lives during the war.
