So let’s jump right in as we learn about the construction of the Rome Colosseum, home of spectacular gladiator fights, wild animal fights, and even naval battles where the Roman people—and Roman emperors, for that matter—cheered on their favorites.
Colosseum Facts FOR KIDS
- It was the Roman Emperor Vespasian, the first of the Flavian Emperors, who built the Colosseum. The construction of this massive amphitheater began in 72 AD.
- This wonder of the Roman world was completed by his son, Emperor Titus, in 80 AD and it is made from tons of concrete as well as travertine limestone.
- Known as the Favian Amphitheater because it was constructed during the Flavian dynasty of Emperors, the Colosseum was a four storey building, and it was used for the first time in either 80 or 81 AD.
- 85,000 people could fit inside the Colosseum.
- During its inauguration, it’s estimated that around 9,000 wild animals were killed on the arena floor.
- Further additions to the Amphitheatrum Flavium were made by Emperor Domitian, the son of Titus. He added more seating area by building a top gallery as well as underground tunnels that housed exotic animals and participants in gladiatorial fights on days of games.
- During medieval times, the Colosseum served as a castle for the Frangipani family.
- A great fire damaged the Colosseum in 241 AD, while natural disasters, such as earthquakes, gave us the Colosseum we see today, which is very different from Ancient Roman times and what the citizens of Rome would attend.
- The movie Gladiator, a Hollywood blockbuster, was not filmed at the Colosseum but in a specially built replica on the Isle of Malta.
- The Colosseum today remains a major drawcard for any tourist visiting Rome.
