White lions, barbary lion, Asian lions… there are so many types of lion species and today we are learning all about these big cats.
For example, do lions live in South Africa? Are they social animals? How far can we hear their roar? Here’s the answer to that! These printables are a great learning resource for kids ages 4 and older. They can learn as they practice early reading comprehension!
- The lion (scientific name Panthera leo) is a large cat of the Panthera native to Africa and India.
- They are the second largest cat in the world!
- Lions are natural predators – actually, they are at the top of the food chain in the African savanna.
- Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called lion prides.
- In the wild, there are two lion subspecies: African lions found in Africa and Asiatic lions found in western India.
- Lions are social creatures and have different roles. Female lions are primary hunters, while dominant males protect the pride’s territory.
- When they are born, young lions only weigh about 53 ounces – they are very small!
- A lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away. They roar to scare off intruders and warn the pride of danger.
- A lion’s mane can grow up to 6 inches and is a sign of dominance. Older males get darker mains.
- Their natural habitat varies a lot, but lions prefer open grasslands, savanna, dense scrub, and open woodlands.
- A lion’s paws are very similar to a cat’s paws but much bigger. They have five toes on the front paws and four on the back.
- A lion’s long tail measures about one-third of its overall body length and help it to balance.
