For any teen who’s ever felt like an underdog, this is a must-watch film. Based on true events, this tells the story of a small-town kid who dreams of playing football for Notre Dame. But he’s faced with a few problems – his grades are low, his athletic skills are poor, and he’s only half the size of the other players. Despite his monumental setbacks, Rudy’s determination and spirit take him farther than anyone could have ever imagined. A truly inspirational movie for any teen who feels “they can’t!”
Remember the Titans (2000) PG
This movie has such a great cast, headed by Denzel Washington. Washington portrays a newly appointed Black coach of a high school team during their first season as a racially integrated school. Based on actual events in 1971, the team becomes the unifying symbol for their community as the boys learn to depend on and trust each other taking them to an inspiring victory.
The Blindside (2009) PG-13
Sandra Bullock won an Academy Award for her outstanding performance as the real-life, caring mom, Leigh Anne Tuohy, who helped turn a homeless and traumatized boy into a first-round NFL draft pick in 2009. It’s a wonderful story of family, courage, hope, and overcoming hardship.
We Are Marshall (2006) PG
Another excellent film based on true events. In 1970, a plane carrying nearly all the players and coaching staff of Marshall University in West Virginia crashed, killing everyone onboard. One young player who missed the flight due to illness convinces the board of governors to play during the 1971 season. The college hires a coach, played by Matthew McConaughey who then has to find players and help this university and town begin to heal. This is one inspiring story.
Friday Night Lights (2007) PG
This film is based on a book about the real-life town of Odessa, Texas, and its heroic high school football team, The Permian High Panthers. The movie was so popular, it became a TV show. It’s an excellent movie for teens that highlights the importance of camaraderie and love among teammates.
12 Mighty Orphans (2021) PG-13
Haunted by a mysterious past, a devoted high-school football coach leads a scrawny team of orphans to the Texas state championship during the Great Depression. This film is based on historical facts and reveals how this unlikely team inspired an entire devastated country during their amazing run.
American Underdog (2021) PG-13

This biographical drama is about Pele’s spectacular rise from the slums of Sao Paulo to him leading Brazil to its first World Cup victory at the age of 17. The soccer scenes in this movie are mesmerizing, and the real Pele makes a cameo in it.

A great family film, this one revolves around a teenage girl in New Jersey with three soccer-playing brothers. Her father doesn’t believe that girls should play soccer and tells her that she’s not tough enough or talented enough to play. Undeterred, she finds strength she never knew existed and persists in changing everyone’s beliefs in what she is capable of, including her own. She faces an uphill battle when fighting to give women the opportunity to play competitive soccer.

Considered by many to be the best baseball movie ever, this is a timeless classic that shouldn’t be missed. A boy in the 1960s moves to a new neighborhood and wants to learn how to play baseball. He’s befriended by the neighborhood baseball guru and becomes one of the baseball buddies. They get into hilarious adventures involving baseball, treehouse sleepovers, the cute lifeguard at the local pool, the snobby rival Little League team – and the Beast, who terrorizes them from beyond the fence at the back of the sandlot. This one’s a true classic.

Based on the true events surrounding Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in Major League Baseball, this is a fascinating look at how Robinson and his family endured unrelenting racist hostility on and off the field, from both players and fans. This story focuses on what may be the most critical turning point in baseball history, and one of its greatest players.
A League of Their Own (1992) PG
This one is another classic with a great cast, led by Tom Hanks. The movie is set during World War II when baseball teams were struggling to find enough men to play, so they turned to form teams with women to keep the fans in their seats. An endearing story of female friendship.
Trouble With the Curve (2012) PG-13
This movie has an excellent cast and centers on the dysfunctional relationship between a father who’s a baseball scout, and his young adult daughter who’s worried about his health and his lifestyle. They reconnect over the course of a scouting trip, which provides any viewer with both laughter and some tears.
Million Dollar Arm (2014) PG
A frustrated sports agent has a bold idea to travel to India to find cricket players and train them to become professional baseball players in America. Based on a true story, it’s heartwarming to watch these two young Indian men adapt to life in Los Angeles, struggling with a new culture, and trying to make their dreams come true.
The Rookie (2002) G
A Texas baseball coach makes the major league after agreeing to try out if his high school team made the playoffs. The 39-year-old father of three finds himself at a camp for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and he somehow seems to have regained his pitching arm, easily throwing a 98 mph fastball. An inspirational story that reminds us all… it’s never too late.

It’s a great story about commitment, dreams, persistence, family, and sportsmanship.
Chariots Of Fire (1982) PG
This film won four Oscars, including best picture in 1982. It centers on two British track athletes, one a determined young Jewish man and the other a devout Christian. They are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they grapple with issues of pride and honor. This one’s worth watching just for the music and sound effects alone.
Unbroken (2014) PG-13
Directed by Angeline Jolie and based on the incredible true story of the former Olympian Louis Zamperini, this movie tells the harrowing tale of how Zamperini survives a near-fatal plane crash in WWII and spends an immensely difficult 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he’s caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. His track training and indomitable spirit help him overcome astonishing odds.
Race (2016) PG-13
This drama, based on true events, is about legendary Black athlete Jesse Owens and his inspiring journey to overcome racism at home and abroad, finishing with his triumphant track-and-field performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Great for fans of history and sports.
4 Minute Mile (2014) PG-13
This film tells the story of a teenager who takes up running as a way to get a college scholarship, so he can leave the undesirable family and social situation he’s in. A former track coach decides to train him, but tragedy strikes, forcing the runner to confront everything that’s been holding him back. This one’s a good story about patience, tenacity, and self-improvement.
The Overcomer (2019) PG
A high school cross-country coach’s life is changed when he meets a runner who pushes herself to the limit and inspires those around her. With a heartwarming twist, the runner ends up finding her long-lost father who she was told was dead and he uses his past history of competitive running to help his daughter win the race of her life.
Right on Track (2013) G
This Disney movie tells the story of two sisters (played by Beverly Mitchell and Brie Larson) who, from the time they were kids, dreamed of racing professionally. You’ll be cheering them on when these girls beat the odds and reach the top of a sport that’s largely dominated by men.

Based on a true story, this sports movie is about Gabby Douglas, the first Black American to win gold as Individual All-around Champion in the Olympics for gymnastics. Whether you’re a gymnastics devotee or not, you’re sure to be amazed by this inspirational story.

In this movie, the former World Heavyweight Champion, Rocky Balboa, serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring.
