Fun facts about Black History Month
- In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
- Carter G. Woodson is considered to be the Father of Black History, as he was the son of former slaves and knew how important education was to secure freedom.
- 11 years later, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans.
- Prior to this, few people studied Black history and it wasn’t included in textbooks.
- They chose this week because it celebrated the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist, and Abraham Lincoln.
- It wasn’t until 1976 that president Gerald Ford extended the week to a whole month, creating Black History Month.
- Black History Month is observed in February in the United States and Canada, and October in the United Kingdom.
- Black History Month honors all African-American men and women from all periods of U.S. history.
- Some notable figures that are spotlighted during Black History Month are Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for equal rights for Black people; Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American in the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison, the first female African-American astronaut to travel to space in 1992, and Barack Obama, the first-ever African-American president of the U.S.
