Your pram is one of your major purchases when having a baby so it’s worth considering exactly what you need so you’ll be able to use it from birth through to preschool. Different parents want different things, so talking to other Mums about what features they value is a great idea.
Here’s a list of some of the most important features when choosing a pram that new Mums have looked for when researching the purchase of their pram. Safety features comes in at number one, followed by practicality then fashion.
Safety Features Checklist
- Large retractable hood that provides plenty of shade and preferably can extend out.
- Check the overall weight of the pram, not just the weight of the frame. Make sure you can easily lift the pram to at least hip height when folded, so you can be sure you’ll be able to put it in and out of your boot easily.
- Tether strap is also important so you can take your hand off the pram without the risk of it rolling away.
- Five point adjustable safety harness. This is an Australian Safety Standard so should be present, but double check if you are buying your pram second-hand or from overseas.
- Good airflow – Prams can get hot so making sure there are mesh inserts for airflow is really important.
Practical Features
When testing out a pram in store, walk around for a little while and play with the folding of the pram. Ask if you can take it out to the car to see if a) you can lift it into the boot and b) it even fits!!
Top features to look out for when choosing a pram:
- Newborn Bassinet or carseat/capsule attachments. When choosing a pram for a newborn, a bassinet can be a good option if your pram doesn’t lie completely flat. Remember not to leave baby in a capsule for longer than 2 hours. See more here.
- Simple to fold – it’s likely you’ll have your hands full so easy one handed fold is key.
- Forward or rearwards facing. It’s nice to see your bub while you walk, but a change of view is great for them so having the option to change it up is essential.
- Fits in to the car boot easily, and preferably leave room for a few other things.
- A reclining seat. As your baby grows and you’re out and about more, your baby needs to be able to nap in the pram. A reclining seat will mean they sleep safely and comfortably.
- Roomy shopping basket. Being able to fit more than a couple of things in the basket underneath is important as some days you’ll need more than just nappies and you won’t want to be carrying shopping bags as well as pushing a pram.
- Easy to steer, preferably with one hand if needed.
- An attachment for a toddler seat or skateboard, particularly if you are planning to have more than one child.
- Research what extras are included, such as cup holders, sun shade/rain cover, foot muff for winter, newborn padding inserts/sheepskin. If you have to buy these separately it could end up costing you more than you anticipated.
- Adjustable handle for different heights so it is comfortable for both you and your partner to drive.
- Puncture proof wheels.
