Popcorn’s irresistible taste and smell are one of the main reasons why this celebration was loooong overdue {giggles} but not the only one. Popcorn is tasty no matter if it’s sweet or savory, and it’s one of the easiest and most versatile snacks ever. Let’s learn a bit about its history and why we celebrate Popcorn day!
National Popcorn Day History
Original corn looked very different from what we know today, but thanks to careful selection for many years, corn has evolved to look like the beloved corn we know today. After that, at some point in history, people found out that corn kernels pop when subjected to heat, and started eating corn in a different way. Yummy!
Then, the Popcorn Board – it is real! – decided it was time to celebrate Popcorn Day back in 1988. And now, here we are! Yay for popcorn!

- National Popcorn Day is celebrated on January 19 every year.
- Only one type of corn pops and it is called Zea Mays Everta.
- Popcorn is really old…over 5000 years!
- Nebraska produces a quarter of all popcorn produced annually in the USA.
- The first popcorn machine was invented in 1885 by Charles Cretors.
- Popcorns only have two shapes, snowflake and mushroom.
- Back in the 1800s, popcorn used to be eaten as a cereal with milk and sugar.
